8/21 "Under One Roof Folk Festival", at the Stone Mountain Center for the Arts, Brownfield, Maine:
Catie Curtis, Ellis Paul, Vance Gilbert, Lucy Kaplansky, and Carol Noonan!!
Seriously, this is like the crown royalty of nationally touring folk masters, all in one show...
8/24 Fundraiser for The Organization for Transformative Farming with fiddler Hope Hoffman at The North Star Music Cafe
Hope is one hell of a fiddler (read Jeff Trippe's review on the Review Archive page of MaineFolkMusic.com);
The OFTF is a great organization, too, helping to raise awareness on the benefits and importance of local, organic farming.
Finally, the North Star is not just a venue, it's a welcoming, comfortable community, and a great place to see a show!
8/30 The Bioneers Green Concert, at the bandstand at Deering Oaks Park, 2 PM to 7 PM
Get this, you local folkies: These are all great acts! Dahlin, Torres, and Ramblin' Red are all very special people to me, and they all make very special music! The Jerks have a brand new record out (read Jeff Trippe's review in this issue of MFM.COM!) Port Veritas is the tops in spoken word in these parts! This show is the essence of Maine folk music - go to the park and immerse yourself!
The Jerks of Grass
Emilia Dahlin
Vanessa Torres and Touching Ground
Ramblin' Red
Zeile August
Comedy from The Escapists
Spoken word from Port Veritas!
9/3 Carrie Rodriguez and Mark Erelli!! At One Longfellow Square!
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge fan of Mark Erelli's songwriting and performance style; he has become huge over the last few years.
We used to see a lot more of him, before he moved to Boston, so this is a great opportunity to see him live! So what's he doing OPENING for Carrie Rodriguez?
I've had not heard Carrie's music, but I checked out her MySpace site and listened to the title track of her new CD, "She Ain't Me". Nicely produced (Malcom Burn (Emylou Harris, Kaki King)), strong confident vocals with a touch of twang, clean folk/pop lyrics and arrangements. I hear she's quite a fiddle player, too. This is high-quality music production, and let's face it, Carrie's riffin' off her looks just a bit. It's the real thing, all right - your gonna see a great show if you go. Mark Erelli is enough to get me there, but Carrie just might be the next superstar in AAA and pop country.
9/12 "Longing for Eliza" at the Camden Opera House
John Gorka, Eliza Gilkyson, and Cliff Eberhardt, in a sort of songwriter-in-the-round folk opera' ... they'll be taking turns playing their songs, and there's some sort of competition going on between Gorka and Eberhardt for Gilkyson's affections. These three are tight as a drum, and together, they'll have a lot of fun, and you will too!
9/13 Jason Spooner at The North Star Music Cafe
Jason is one of the most successful of the local artists; he'll be hurrying north to Portland on this day after playing the Boston Folk Festival!
Great tunes, great venue - 'nuff said
9/20 Songwriters by the Sea, 5th Maine Regimental Museum, Peaks Island, 7:00 PM
Featuring Bob McKillop, Alan Dickson, Doug Kolmar, and Phil Daligan (Phil is also hosting the show)
Shameless self promotion with me on the bill! Come see a bunch of middle-aged men prove that dreams can live on after you turn 50!
Alan is a good friend and my musical partner - he's got a great bag full of original tunes and he plays a mean mandolin!
Doug Kolmar is another friend and musical colleague, great tunes full of keen observations, pearls of wisdom, and nicely-played, jazz-influenced guitar!
Phil Daligan hosts a great show, but his real strength is in his fingers - a great finger-style guitarist who writes slightly dark, experiential tales and sings them with a British bite.
Come over on the ferry and have dinner before hand at the Cockeyed Gull - my recommendation for great food on Peaks Island!
9/27 Nina Soka, and Ronda Dale opens, at the Dog Fish Bar and Grille, Portland
Nina's from Brooklyn, and has lot's of friends on Peaks Island, which is why we get to hear her once in a while. I first heard her when she came by the open mic that I co-hosted for a couple of years at the Dog Fish - I was immediately captivated by her voice.
Ronda Dale is the bass player for Truth About Daisies, plus a major part of the wonderful harmonies put out by that group. She's also a hell of a songwriter and performer in her own right.
This will be a great show!
